Experimental Electromagnetic Scattering Model Validation and Optimization for In-Situ Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM) Inspection

This Project aims to experimentally measure the millimeter wave electromagnetic (EM) scattering cross-section of metal powder clouds and validate and optimize the performance of a corresponding electromagnetic scattering model, that was previously developed The objectives are to explore the experimental aspects of measuring the temporal in-situ EM scattering properties of ejected metal powder (i.e., spatter) in a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) process.  The outcome of these measurements is expected to provide critical information about the state of the AM process and indicate the potential for in-situ defect detection and characterization.
