ISU’s NDE Minor Experiences Phenomenal Growth

chart showing NDE Minor enrollment on the rise

During the last decade (in particular) there has been an increasing need for engineers and scientists with training, knowledge and background in nondestructive evaluation (NDE). This has been identified as one of the most critical aspects of “NDE workforce development” in the country. The College of Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU), has been offering a nationally-unique educational program that directly addresses this issue – the “NDE Minor”. The NDE minor is offered to engineering major students regardless of their specific engineering discipline. In the past three years and under the direction of Dr. David Eisenmann, the NDE Minor has experienced a phenomenal growth in enrollment (see graph below).  Recent additional offerings, such as the X-ray course, has further strengthened the educational value and viability of this unique program. The recent increase in enrollment has been the result of several factors, including: meeting with academic advisors to encourage students to enroll in the program, positive “word of mouth” from students already enrolled in the program, support from the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE), and advertising this unique offering  – getting the word out about employment opportunities in the field of NDE and pursuing an exciting career with which to help solve real-world problems while keeping the “world a safer place”. Employers have also responded positively by offering internships and Co-Ops to these students as well as long-term career opportunities.  More information about the NDE Minor can be found HERE.
