IPRT Company Assistance -
Nondestructive Evaluation/Quality

The Center for Nondestructive Evaluation is proud to be part of the IPRT Company Assistance team. IPRT, or more formally, the Institute for Physical Research and Technology, is a network of scientific research centers at Iowa State University. IPRT Company Assistance helps Iowa companies solve technical problems, create new products, increase productivity and improve quality. Please visit the IPRT web site at www.iprt.iastate.edu for more information on the overall organization.

Through IPRT Company Assistance, Iowa manufacturers can receive up to 40 hours of NDE support at no-cost. The outreach effort builds on the strong research capabilities of CNDE; however, the focus here is on education and technology transfer. The work is supported by several staff members of CNDE and usually two or three undergraduate engineering students. Funded is provided by an economic development grant from the state of Iowa.

What can we do for you?

As mentioned above, CNDE can provide up to 40 hours of support to Iowa companies at no cost. A project can be initiated with a simple phone call or email message. Most projects can be brought to completion or to a convenient stopping point in this amount of time. If additional work is required, a company may request that a proposal be prepared and they then have the option to fund or not fund the additional work. CNDE staff will tailor the effort to meet your specific need. Some of the typical services provided include:

  • Explaining and demonstrating the principles of various NDE Methods.
  • Developing or evaluating inspection techniques and procedures.
  • Performing feasibility studies to determine if NDE methods will work for a specific application.
  • Assisting with the interpretation of standards and specifications.
  • Providing information on sources for equipment and NDE services
  • Disseminating information on state-of-the-art advances in NDE

Free educational seminars that introduce NDE and the six most common NDE methods can also be arranged. Seminars can be tailored to meet a groups specific need but typically last from one to four-hours. Seminar generally covers the principles, common applications and the strengths and limitations of the six most commonly used NDE Methods. When time allows, hands-on demonstrations are included using portable equipment. The seminar can be delivered at any location within the state of Iowa. Continuing education credit is available through the ISU College of Engineering for the four hour seminar.
