Highlighted Projects
The
subjects and results of most projects are kept confidential at the request
of our clients. However, some companies allow their stories to be told
and the results of these efforts can be shared with the NDT community.
A few such projects are highlighted below. Please note that some of
these articles were written when the NDE outreach program was called
the Iowa Demonstration Lab (IDL).

Spot
Weld Quality Assessment
Five manufacturers of spot-welded products, ranging from refrigerators
to office furniture to automotive assemblies had an interest in evaluation
the quality of spot welds by nondestructive means. The welds were examined
by 4-point resistivity and ultrasonic testing, which formed the major
portion of this work. Some welds were also examined by eddy current
and radiographic methods, which were in varying degrees of refinement.
An overview of the test results can be found
here.
Nondestructive
Evaluation of Powder Metallurgy (PM) Parts.
IPRT Company Assistance helped to organize a seminar presented under
the banner of the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) that was
held in Ames on July 7-8, 1998. Entitled "Applications of Nondestructive
Evaluation in Powder Metallurgy," this seminar brought together
manufacturers and users of PM parts to hear numerous presentations by
representatives of various NDE techniques, both commercially available
and currently being researched. Dave Utrata of CNDE presented
2 papers at that seminar. Also, part of the incentive for this work
to look at PM parts came out of a collaborative effort with Square D
Company of Cedar Rapids, IA, an international manufacturer of electrical
systems. Some additional work that came as a natural follow-on
to the work presented at the MPIF seminar was presented at the 1998
QNDE conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Powerpoint presentations of those three talks are available for viewing
here.
