Industry Partners: Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, Allison/Rolls Royce, General Electric, Honeywell, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines

Objectives:

  • To apply the simulation code, XRSIM, to industrially related problems
  • To extend the models as necessary to support the analysis of real problems

  • To develop a PC version of the code for transfer to commercial use

Approach:

  • Develop simulation code that allows range of material properties, setup parameters (source, detector), and realistic flaw types for use with standard CAD files

  • Incorporate various physical aspects of radiography

  • Perform necessary validation, with industrial partners

  • Apply model to real inspection problems with industrial partners through betasite test and problem solving at ISU

  • Further improvements based on feedback from users


XRSIM has been used to solve many real problems in cooperation with industry partners. Future applications will include detection limits of inclusions, evaluation of weld repair, training, and development of procedure for casting inspections.

  • GPC-based program in use by industry

  • Applications to inspection questions from FAA
