Investigation Team: I. Komsky, J. Achenbach - Northwestern University

Industry Partners: United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Boeing

Objectives:

  • Support the application and transfer of dual probe UT techniques for the detection, characterization and sizing of defects in multilayered structures
  • Provide method for the systematic selection of UT wave modes and transducer configurations based on spatial orientation of layers, fasteners and flaws

  • Develop modular inspection system for UT

  • Integrate commercial scanning system with data acquisition modules and portable flaw detectors

Approach:

  • Define inspection requirements/geometries

  • Design prototype scanning units which do not require direct placement of the scanner on the component using interchangeable mounting plates and commercial transducers

  • Develop appropriate data acquisition and data display (imaging) schemes

  • Transition capability through field demo and validation activities in cooperation with AANC and industry

Prototypes for UT inspection have been developed, laboratory tested, and are ready for technology transfer.

Products:

  • Inspection techniques for application to Boeing, Cessna, and Fairchild planes
