Team: I. Komsky,
J. Achenbach - Northwestern University
Industry
Partners: United Airlines, Northwest Airlines,
Boeing
Objectives:
Support
the application and transfer of dual probe UT techniques for the detection,
characterization and sizing of defects in multilayered structures
Provide method
for the systematic selection of UT wave modes and transducer configurations
based on spatial orientation of layers, fasteners and flaws
Develop
modular inspection system for UT
Integrate
commercial scanning system with data acquisition modules and portable
flaw detectors
Approach:
Define inspection
requirements/geometries
Design prototype
scanning units which do not require direct placement of the scanner
on the component using interchangeable mounting plates and commercial
transducers
Develop appropriate
data acquisition and data display (imaging) schemes
Transition capability
through field demo and validation activities in cooperation with AANC
and industry
Prototypes for
UT inspection have been developed, laboratory tested, and are ready
for technology transfer.
Products:
Inspection techniques
for application to Boeing, Cessna, and Fairchild planes
