Investigation
Team: Bob
Thomas, Skip Favro, Xiaoyan Han - Wayne State University
Industry Partners: FAA Certification
Engineers and Aviation Safety Inspectors |
Objectives:
Approach:
- Study the limits
of detectability of cracks in different structures and optimize sonic
transduction including different methodologies for coupling the sound
to various aircraft structures
- Evaluate signal
processing methodologies for weak signals and/or small cracks including
algorithms for thresholding and automation of defect recognition
- Perform laboratory
testing on representative specimens and parts removed from aircraft
and complete field evaluation at AANC
|
Sonic infrared
imaging has the potential for wide application as a technique that is
full-field and capable of reliable crack detection.
|
Products:
- Design of a prototype
system and plan for technology transfer
