Investigation Team: Kunigal Shivakumar, Derome Dunn, Sameer Hamoush - North Carolina A&T

Industry Partners: Nordam, Timco

Objectives:

  • To develop nondestructive testing to detect disbonds in composite repairs
  • To develop analytical models to assess degradation of strength and life of repaired parts

  • To test and verify the results

Approach:

  • Identify types and procedures of composite repairs

  • Generate/acquire samples with and without disbonds
  • Perform NDE in cooperation with ISU-CASR
  • Perform destructive measurement of damage to map damage size, mechanical properties, fatigue life and residual strength and correlate to NDE

  • Develop FEM for stress and fracture mechanics analysis to assess the severity of the disbond and correlate to measured strength and life of repairs

The quality assurance of repairs made on composite components and the predictability of the remaining service life of the repaired ports is essential to their continued airworthness.

Products:

  • Engineering data for composite repairs
