Rick has been a
Metallurgical Engineer (Assistant Scientist) for the Center since
May of 2000. He received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering
at Iowa State University in 1998, an A.A.S. degree in Nondestructive
Testing in 1995, and is currently working towards a M.S. degree in
materials science. Prior to joining the Center he worked for
Mercury Marine’s Outboard Division as a Manufacturing Quality
Engineer in Fond du Lac, WI (connecting rod and crankshaft machining
areas), interned for Boeing’s Materials Technology (BMT) Group in
Renton, WA (failure analysis, aluminum, and titanium areas), and was
an ASME-certified welder and quality control technician at Vessel
Systems in Dubuque, IA (performed GMAW, SMAW, SAW).
Research
interests have included: participation in two large research
efforts generating engineering data to improve the reliability of
fluorescent penetrant inspection (results of this program were
recognized with the 2004 Better Way Award from the Air Transport
Association and FAA); validation efforts for a magnetic particle
simulation program; and work with IPRT Company Assistance – NDE
Group, which provides no-cost technical aid to Iowa manufacturers.
