Timothy A. Gray is a Senior
Engineer and Group Leader for Ultrasonic Applications in the Center
for Nondestructive Evaluation and Adjunct Assistant Professor of
Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University. He has been with
CNDE since 1981. Dr. Gray received his Ph.D. in Engineering
Mechanics from Iowa State University (1981) and holds undergraduate
(B.A., 1973, University of Wyoming) and graduate (M.S., 1977, Iowa
State University) degrees in Mathematics. His research and
development interests are in the field of ultrasonics -- primarily
computer modeling of ultrasonic inspectability, and development of
ultrasonic inspection and signal processing techniques. Main
thrusts in computer modeling arena are development of methods and
codes for estimating probability of detection flaws in components
and integration of software for simulating ultrasonic inspections,
namely UTSim. Ultrasonic application areas include NDE of girth
welds in pipelines, inspection of friction stir welds, and advances
in the use of ultrasonic phased arrays. Dr. Gray has co-authored
over 70 technical publications in the area of ultrasonics.
