Bruce Thompson was
recognized with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)
Research Council's Award for Sustained Excellence at the March 2007
meeting of the Society. Dr. Thompson was nominated by Kevin Smith
of Pratt & Whitney with supporting letters from Bob Green, Johns
Hopkins University; James Malas, US Air Force Research Laboratory;
Alex Schwarzkopf, National Science Foundation; and Aquil Ahmad of Eaton Corporation on behalf of the CNDE
Industrial Advisory Board. In Smith's nomination of
Bruce, he commented that Bruce
has demonstrated sustained excellence in research in the field of
nondestructive testing through a long career filled with
achievements leading to significant advancements in the state-of
the-art. In addition to highlighting Bruce's research achievements,
mentoring of students, and excellent academic credentials, Bruce was
also recognized for his exceptional capability to perceive the
possibilities for how theoretical concepts can be applied to
industrial concerns. "Few individuals possess the depth of
knowledge and the ability to transform that knowledge into useful
information as Bruce Thompson."
Bruce provided the keynote lecture for the Thursday morning session,
highlighting his work with microstructural characterization and
continued the day as the chair of the POD Tutorial session. The POD
Tutorial session was provided by Bill Meeker, (Distinguished
Profession, ISU) and Floyd Spencer (Sandia National Laboratories),
colleagues that Bruce has also worked closely with in the POD and
reliability areas. The POD Tutorial session was well attended.
